Apple New Mac Pro Coming At WWDC?

April 12th 2013, Post-NAB Update: Several sources report Apple secretly showed a new Mac Pro prototype by invitation only at a suite off the NAB show floor. The revised and upgraded model has a desktop configuration, 2/3rds the size of the present model (see example image below). First hand accounts also indicate 2 slots internally, contrasting the present 3 slot configuration. The final details of the upgrade are expected to be announced at the WWDC (Worldwide Developers Conference) in June, with first customer shipments in Aug/Sept 2013.

If true, Apple may stop the trend with many professional users moving to Windows or Linux for contemporary performance benefits including 16core processors, USB 3.0, Thunderbolt connectivity and much more . All would be a welcome sight for most professional audio and video content creators. EAR will be offering special upgrade bundles for Avid, Adobe and Apple once final pricing has been confirmed. Update April 2nd 2013, PreNAB Update: MacRumors reports that Apple is starting to warm up to the notion that selling professional software without a high performance hardware platform is a difficult road to travel.

In late March Apple announced upgrades to their video editing software in advance of the annual broadcast NAB show (National Association of Broadcasters) in Las Vegas. Some speculate the timing might compliment the announcement of a new Mac Pro model.

Alongside today’s new marketing push to try to win back professional video editors, Apple has released updates for Final Cut Pro X, Motion, and Compressor. While Motion and Compressor have seen mostly minor tweaks and bug fixes, Final Cut Pro X has received a somewhat more substantial update including support for the new Sony XAVC codec up to 4K resolution.

Effective March 1st Apple is prohibited from selling their high-end desktop Mac pro model in Europe. Following this turn of events, Mac Rumors reports that under pressure to offer a solution to the European Mac Pro Market – Apple reportedly leaked the news to  European resellers that a new Mac Pro is coming soon.

“… we believe that the judgment of the Mac Pro is temporary, Apple informs us that new Mac Pro will be released in spring 2013.”

If true, we would expect an early April confirmation with first shipments summer of 2013. Could Apple be planning to breath new life into their high-end Mac Pro product line? The following summary is a chronological recap of Apple’s flirtatious signally (or not) about their next generation, extreme performance desktop Mac Pro line.

What would the new Mac Pro look like? The present Mac Pro model reflects two major factors: Power supply and cooling for extreme performance processors – and – PCIe slots for add-on functionality.

The desktop computer world has changed dramatically in just 2 years. Thunderbolt technology already used in the newer Mac Book Pro models and USB 3 can easily replace the need for slots and the extra cooling they required.

There is a high probability the new Mac Pro will be much smaller and rackmount capable (best guess image the left). Apple continues to release server versions of their newest Lion OS 10.7. A rack form factor would  make a great server and with “lights-out” hardware equally beneficial to the remote desktop work group environments.

New Processors, more power? Many people think the delays in the release of the next generation of the Mac Pro have greatly to do with Intel’s new Sandy Bridge processors. The high performance version of these processors were only released in quantity at the end of 2011. These processors (up to 16 cores) have substantial performance benefits for compositing, animation, larger video format editing and people interested in buying hardware they can upgrade over a 5-8 year life cycle.

Among the guesstimates and wishlist items are features borrowed from recent iMac and other laptop refreshes. They could include:

• Thunderbolt input/output as the next generation in high speed interfaces and peripheral connectivity.
• Next Generation Processors – Sandy Bridge Intel processors
• Rack Mount Form Factor – Sure to please the professional world and appease some the the lost Xserve market
• 16 Core Option – Enough processing to set it apart from the laptop and iMac models
• USB 3.0 connectivity
• Pricing is expected to remain similar for same functionality, new 16 core unit priced similar to existing 12 core model
